What’s to love about Yuma, AZ? Lots of things! Whether you’re a Wild West buff, a US military history fan, want to enjoy the great outdoors, or have another type of interest, there are tons of things to see, do, and experience in town.
For those new to the city, or who haven’t really had time to do much exploring, a stop at Castle Dome Mines Museum & Ghost Town is at the top of the list. Once upon a time, this town was larger than Yuma. What remains is a ghost town that you can explore and experience what life was like back in the late 1800s. Note that getting to the site does require driving down a seven-mile stretch of gravel road, so drive with caution. However, it is well worth the effort to get here.
Another local landmark that regularly draws lots of visitors is the Yuma Territorial Prison State Park. It first opened its doors in 1876 with just seven prisoners (who built the place themselves). Today, it is a unique museum that offers visitors an up close and personal look at the harsh life of prisoners in the 1800s.
For those who want to combine a bit of outdoors exploration with learning, check out the Colorado River State Historic Park. You can also head over to the Yuma Proving Ground Heritage Center for a bit of military history, or the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area for a bit or railroad history. Yuma Armed Forces Park, and the Casa De Coronado Museum offer additional learning opportunities.
History isn't your thing? Then you should check out Gateway Park – take any of the hiking or biking trails, or spend some time on the beach and soak up the Arizona sun. The gardens are also well worth exploring.
The Yuma East Wetlands offer a unique look at how wetlands survive in such an arid environment, and you should also make time to visit the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge. Or, if you want to cool off, we recommend taking any of the river rafting and/or tubing trips that are available in the area. Of course, if you want to cool off without getting that close to nature, you have the option of heading over to Waylon’s Water World for some man-made aquatic fun.
Want to get your shopping on? Head to the Arizona Marketplace – it’s sort of a flea market and farmers market rolled into one. The Yuma Swap Meet is also a fun place to visit. If you have kids, a visit to the Stewart Vincent Wolf Creative Playground is definitely something to consider.
There are plenty of other things to do in town. Check out the many programs put on at the Yuma Civic Center throughout the year. Head to any of the nine excellent golf courses in and around town. Pay your respects at the Robert G. Fowler statue, visit the Mormon Battalion Monument, or enjoy some contemplation in the Robert J. Moody Demonstration Garden.
