In a perfect world, you would never need to use your car insurance. You would simply pay your premium and go about your life, knowing that you were protected should you ever be involved in an accident. However, most of us will ultimately be involved in an auto accident of some type, whether it’s a minor fender-bender, or something more serious. Understanding the steps to follow in the case of an accident, as well as how to file an auto insurance claim are essential.
At Freedom National, we insure drivers of all experience levels, from first-time drivers to veterans of the highway with decades of experience under their belt. We are also proud to insure many types of vehicles, and we can also work with drivers with needs such as high-risk insurance, or DUI insurance. We believe that it is our responsibility to ensure that our customers know exactly what to do in the case of an accident. The guide below will walk you through the process of filing an auto insurance claim.
If you haven’t yet gotten the protection that you need, we invite you to use our convenient online form to get a quote on car insurance in just a few short minutes.
Before we discuss how to file an auto insurance claim, or even what to do in the case of an accident, we need to explore the reasons why you might need to file a claim in the first place. There are several potential situations in which you’d need to do so, including the following:
Keep in mind that coverage for these incidents is determined by the type and amount of coverage that you carry on your policy. For example, if you don't carry comprehensive coverage then you would not receive any payouts if your car is stolen. If you have any questions about what your policy does and does not cover, consult your policy documents or contact your insurance company for assistance.
While there are many reasons to file a claim, the most common is being involved in an auto accident. In this instance, you will need to follow a few specific steps.
When it comes to how to file an auto insurance claim successfully, the key is to have the right information. What information will you need on hand?
While it's not necessary to report your claim from the accident scene, be sure to contact your insurance company as soon as possible to start the process. That way, you can report the accident while the details are still fresh in your mind. Most states have a statute of limitations for reporting an auto accident - often a couple of years - so keep that in mind, as well.
Be sure to cooperate with your insurance company and provide any documents or statements that they reasonably request during the claims process. Follow up with your adjuster if there is a delay in the process, just to make sure that you didn't miss a request from them.
Once you have started the claims process, things will likely move along pretty quickly. However, it is important to have an idea of the steps in the process.
After you have filed your claim, whether you use our online form or call us directly, your claim will be assigned to a claims adjuster. The adjuster will take statements from you and any other drivers, collect any police reports or other documents that are available, and review your policy to look for coverage for the loss. If coverage is in order and you carry collision coverage, your vehicle will be inspected and either repaired or declared a total loss. In the case of a total loss, you and/or your finance company would receive a settlement amount based on the vehicle's value before the accident.
If there are injuries, sometimes another adjuster is assigned to the bodily injury portion of your claim. If coverage is confirmed, he or she will review the medical bills and records that are related to the accident to determine an appropriate settlement offer for each injured party.
At Freedom National, we want to help make the claims process as simple and streamlined as possible. Whether you file a claim online, or call us in person, we will work to ensure your peace of mind and get you back on the road.
