From the Chattahoochee River to the historic downtown, there’s an incredible number of things to see and do within this city. What began as a city marking the beginning of the Chattahoochee’s navigable portion has today grown to boast a population of over 200,000 residents – closer to 400,000 if you consider those living in the surrounding area. In fact, Columbus is the third-largest city in Georgia.
As you might imagine, there’s plenty to enjoy in town. We’ll begin with the Columbus Riverwalk, which spans a good distance in the city’s heart and is an ideal place for an afternoon bike ride or an evening stroll with that special someone. The Riverwalk actually starts outside of the downtown area and allows parking, so you can park and walk into town for shopping and dining options.
The downtown area is an excellent option for exploration. While the city itself might boast a population of over 200,000, it manages to retain both its historical character and small-town charm. Most of the buildings are made from red brick, which gives it a unique character in contrast to the skyscrapers of nearby Atlanta. It’s a very approachable city for those who want to explore the numerous shops and eateries in town on foot.
If you’re interested in absorbing some culture and history, the Columbus Museum offers a lot of insight into the area and its past. From its beginnings as Creek territory, to its official settlement in the 1800s by American settlers to the modern age, you’ll get your fill of local history and culture here.
Another option for getting your history on is the National Civil War Naval Museum. While other museums might offer insight into the land-based battles that characterized the War Between the States, this one focuses on the naval battles, which are all too often overlooked, despite their importance to the ultimate outcome of the war.
Speaking of aquatic activities, the Chattahoochee River runs right behind the downtown area. It offers plenty of options for exploration, ranging from ecological tours and environmental protection initiatives to whitewater rafting and other adrenaline-fueled excursions. Or, if you’re looking for something out of the Georgia heat and a little less active, think about heading over to the Coca-Cola Space Science Center, or down to the Columbus Convention and Trade Center.
The RiverCenter for the Performing Arts puts on outstanding shows throughout the year and is an excellent option for visitors of all ages, and the Heritage Corner gives you a closer look at history and culture in the area. The Columbus Botanical Garden is always worth exploring. For fun, make sure to stop and introduce the kids to Kadie the Cow of Columbus – this towering cow statute overlooks parkland tat’s perfect for enjoying the warmth of a summer evening in the South.
For those looking for a bit more physical activity, but without the exposure to Georgia’s infamous humidity, consider heading to the Columbus Ice Rink, where you’ll get to enjoy an afternoon on the ice (and out of the sun). If you’re a foodie, then make sure you get on one of the many food tours through the city while you’re there.
You’ll also find that the area has its very own brewery – Chattabrewchee Southern Brewhouse – which is located in nearby West Point.
