With a city the size of Augusta, there really is so much to love. There’s something on offer to appeal to any interest, whether that’s natural exploration, history, sports, craft beer, spending time with family, or something completely different.
If you’re into sports, golf in particular, then the Masters golf tournament that comes to Augusta every year should be definitely pretty high up on your list of things to attend. There’s more than just what happens on the course, though. The entire city is transformed, with Masters-themed decorations, and even events at local businesses and restaurants. Whether you want to be on the course in person to watch some of the best in the sport tee off against one another, or you prefer to watch the excitement on the big screen with a cold beer in hand, you’ll find it available.
For those who like to delve into history, the Augusta Museum of History is a great place to start. You’ll find a host of exhibits here from all stages of Augusta’s past, from trolley cars to locomotives to long boats, and everything in between. Admission is affordable, and you can spend an entire day wandering through the various themed rooms, immersed in local and state history.
Augusta’s history is intertwined with the Savannah River, and you’ll find a number of ways that you can explore that deep connection. One of those is the Savannah Rapids Visitor Center. Here, you can learn about the Savannah River’s various ecosystems, but also get out and hike or bike. There are also kayak and canoe rentals on offer.
Another option is the Augusta Canal Discovery Center, where you can learn more about how the city grew as a maritime power based on canals carved out of the river itself. Of course, the Riverwalk is a perennial favorite. Stroll along the waters of the Savannah River, or go for a jog or bike ride. Stop at any of the local shops and eateries while you’re at it.
While you’re exploring the city, make sure you take time to visit the boyhood home of President Woodrow Wilson, as well as the Morris Museum of Art. Both are easy to reach and well worth a few minutes of exploration.
If craft beer is your thing, then you’re in luck. The city of Augusta is finally home to a couple of local breweries. You can visit the Savannah River Brewing Company or Riverwatch Brewing Company, both of which are located just a stone’s throw from one another near the heart of downtown. You should also make time to check out the Augusta Craft Beer Festival. 2018 was the first year for this event, but it sold out in record time and will be returning each year in April.
For those with a more shop-till-you-drop mentality, the Augusta Mall is a great choice. However, there are plenty of others. Check out the Riverfront Antique Mall, as well as the entirety of the Riverwalk if you like.
