Of course, if you look at the larger metro area, you’ll find nearly 230,000 residents. Today, Macon is the fourth largest city in Georgia, and is almost perfectly located in the state’s geographic center – thus the nickname, The Heart of Georgia. As you can imagine, there are tons of things that you can see, do, and experience throughout the year here.
If you love history, then a visit to the Ocmulgee National Monument is definitely in order. You can check out the massive earthen mounds constructed by Native Americans over 1000 years ago! You can also tour the facility and get up close and personal with thousands of ancient artifacts discovered in the area. It’s well worth spending a full day here just to connect with the past.
Another option to help you get your history on is the Museum of Aviation, where you’ll find hundreds of different exhibits all dedicated to the history of flight in the United States. You’ll find civilian aircraft, but also examples of military aviation technology on display here.
Want a bit more antebellum history? A trip to the Hay House puts you squarely into the mid-1800s, just before the outbreak of the Civil War. This home is incredibly restored and preserved, all the way from the stunning tile floors to the artfully designed ceilings. The Confederate Treasurer, William Butler Johnston, constructed this massive home to mimic those found in Rome. It took four full years to construct this 18,000-square foot mansion.
If you’ve got an interest in music, particularly classic rock, then we would recommend checking out the Allman Brothers Band Museum at the Big House. Once, the Allman brothers called this place home. Today, it houses memorabilia and artifacts from the band and related musicians and musical acts.
If you love sports like we do, particularly Georgia sports, then the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame is the place for you. You’ll find memorabilia and exhibits dedicated to the major sports teams in Georgia – the Falcons, Hawks, and Braves – but you will also discover a lot more dedicated to the state’s rich collegiate sports history, as well as minor league teams.
For those looking for a bit of outdoor fun, there are plenty of choices. The John Drew Smith Tennis Center offers fun for all ages on the court. You can also take a day and spend it in the sun at the Sandy Beach Water Park at Lake Tobo – whether you want to enjoy exciting water slides, or just hope to soak up some rays on the beach, this park is a great place for young and old alike. Amerson River Park is a great place to go for a walk, run, or even bike ride while enjoying the flow of the Ocmulgee River.
Interested in spending some quality family time? Check out the Lane Southern Orchards, where you can pick fresh fruit and enjoy locally grown produce. From peaches to pecans, you’ll find a host of Georgia’s prime agricultural products, and they are all farm fresh. The orchards also offer a connection with Georgia’s history – they’ve been operating since 1908, making this one of the oldest such locations in the state.
