The Classic City: the name is synonymous with everything from indie music to higher education. At Freedom National, we’re very proud to be part of this eclectic community. We do more than just offer residents the car insurance they need, though. We live, work, and play here, too!
We have to admit that one of our favorite things about Athens, GA, is the craft beer scene, and the way it has grown over the years. While we were sad to see Copper Creek close down in 2018, Akademia Brewing more than fills the brewpub space. Of course, there are plenty of production breweries around, too.
Terrapin is the most established, and the largest brewery in Athens. You can visit their tap room throughout the week, and they’re located just outside the Loop heading toward Commerce. Creature Comforts, located downtown, has earned national acclaim. The Southern Brewing Company can be found just outside the Loop to the north toward Danielsville, as well.
Of course, there’s much more to see and do in town than enjoy locally brewed beer. There’s a happening food scene. Check out Ted’s Most Best for some of the best pizza in your life. Or, you can head to the Root or the Pine. Catch 22 is the place to go if you want to enjoy the gastropub environment, and if you’re a vegetarian, then make sure to head down to the Grit downtown.
Want to enjoy some music, instead? The 40 Watt is the place to go. You can also visit the Foundry, Live Wire, the historic Georgia Theatre. Want something a bit more outdoors oriented? The Georgia State Botanical Garden is located right here in Athens, but Sandy Creek Park is also a great place to spend the day outdoors. Other outdoor options include Trial Gardens at the University of Georgia, or you can take a hike down the Birchmore Trail. A visit to Bear Hollow Zoo might also be worth your time.
If you’re looking for a bit of sightseeing enjoyment, or want to take in some of the area’s more prominent landmarks, we would highly recommend visiting the Morton Theater downtown. The Georgia Museum of Art is also located in town. There’s also the Seney-Stovall Chapel. Foley Field is also worth a visit. However, perhaps the most common sightseeing excursion is taking a tour through the massive grounds of the University of Georgia, which dominates much of the city. As far as the most unique landmarks in town, you can check out the Tree That Owns Itself (now actually the Son of the Tree That Owns Itself with the demise of the original tree).
More into sports? Check out any of the Bulldog (UGA) games at Sanford Stadium or the other sporting venues around town. Whether you like basketball, football, soccer, or something else, there’s a college version here to enjoy.
