Flagstaff is also called the gateway to the San Francisco Peaks, but there is so much more to this alpine city than stunning mountains and the surrounding forests. Of course, getting out and into pristine nature is one of the most common pastimes here, but there are plenty of other things to do and see while you’re in town.
If you’re new to the city, or you just want to get better acquainted with Flagstaff’s history and character, we recommend taking a trip to the city’s historic downtown and railroad district. Route 66 runs right through the area, along the old railroad, and it has been converted into a pedestrian-friendly center filled with shopping options, dining choices, history, and more.
Want a little more history? A visit to the Riordan Mansion State Historic Park is in order, then. Or, you could visit the Wupatki National Monument to explore ancient ruins.
For those who enjoy a bit of stargazing, there’s always the Lowell Observatory. You get the chance to go hands-on with a world-class telescope, bringing the wonders of the heavens down to earth.
If you want to get out and experience nature, we recommend a trip to Walnut Canyon National Monument. It covers an impressive 3,600 acres and is filled with everything from beautiful forests to rugged mountains and Native American ruins, as well. Whether you want to go hiking or dig into North America’s ancient past, you’ll find it here. While you’re in the exploring mood, head out to Humphrey’s Peak, which stands as the tallest in the San Francisco Range.
When it comes to iconic landmarks, there’s nothing quite like Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. A drive out to Elden Pueblo is always worth your time, too.
After exploring the area, you’ll probably have developed quite a thirst. Quench it at Flagstaff’s own craft brewery – Mother Road Brewing. You can also head over to Historic Brewing Company for food and drink, or take a ride on the Alpine Pedaler (a pedal bike bar that tours town). Beaver Street Brewery, Drinking Horn Meadery, and Wanderlust Brewing Company round out your options.
If shopping is more your thing, you have no shortage of options. Babbitt’s Backcountry is your source for specialty items. Olive the Best sells oils and vinegars to help you whip up your own delectable meals. There’s also the Flagstaff Mall where you can shop with well-known anchor stores, and Sprouts Farmers Market is the place to pick up farm-fresh produce, locally baked bread, and more. From fine wines to books, antiques to jewelry, there’s shopping to delight you right here in town.
